When a Nazi flag was raised outside their church, Herman Klenert took it down and handed it back. When offered a free medical license in exchange for loyalty, he refused. When told his children would suffer, he held to a higher law.
But this family's story of courage did not begin in Germany. Years earlier, Herman and Margaret Klenert served as missionaries in remote Chinese villages — digging wells, teaching children, and spreading hope until Boxer rebels bound them and marched them toward execution. They survived through a faith so resolute that even their captors were moved. The same faith that carried them through a Chinese jungle would later be tested in the streets of Nazi Germany.
