The Story

When the whole world bowed, they stood.

In Nazi Germany, joining the party was not a choice — it was survival. To refuse was to mark your family, your children, and your future. Yet the Klenerts did exactly that. When a Nazi flag was raised outside their church, Herman Klenert took it down and handed it back. When offered a free medical license in exchange for loyalty, he refused. When told his children would suffer, he held to a higher law.

But this family's story of courage did not begin in Germany. Years earlier, Herman and Margaret Klenert served as missionaries in remote Chinese villages — digging wells, teaching children, and spreading hope until Boxer rebels bound them and marched them toward execution. They survived through a faith so resolute that even their captors were moved. The same faith that carried them through a Chinese jungle would later be tested in the streets of Nazi Germany.

This is the true account of what it means to STAND FAST when standing still is the most dangerous thing of all.

“If you have faith and want it emboldened — read this. If you are searching, read this, and decide where you will stand.”

From the Book

“If we die today we see the Lord today.”

Facing execution by Chinese Boxer rebels, Hans Heinrich speaks calm assurance to his terrified wife. Bound and marched toward a jungle death camp, the four missionaries begin to sing “It Is Well With My Soul” — their voices joined by the very villagers who once feared them. Sandwiched between armed soldiers and praying friends, they walk into the unknown with a faith that would shape generations.

About the Author

Andrew Klenert

Andrew Klenert grew up in the remarkable family whose story he tells. As a boy, he sat at the dining table listening to his father's stories from Nazi Germany — stories he would replay in his head when he felt alone, when he had doubts, or when he stumbled in his faith. These stories formed the very foundation of his worldview, co-mingled with great Bible stories, to build his view of God and man.

His father immigrated to America post-World War II at the age of only 19, with broken smatterings of English, and thrived as a technician for Mercedes. Though he faced resentment from those who had not yet moved on from the pain of war, his dry humor and unshakeable faith won people over. Andrew wrote Stand Fast so that others, too, might be amazed, stunned, speechless, and encouraged by what one family can do when they refuse to bend.
